Weight Loss Affirmations - Vibrant Health - I Lost 40 lbs

This page is a continuation of weight loss affirmations.

The Keys to my losing and keeping off 40 lbs were:

  • Affirmations for weight loss focused on Vibrant Health
  • Researching the best eating habits for health and weight loss
  • An eating plan
  • Increasing physical exercise
  • Having small and reasonable weekly weight loss goals
  • Having a “stepped” approach to weight loss

Vibrant Health And Not Weight Loss As Primary Goal

As I explained in another page, my WEIGHT LOSS AFFIRMATIONS were not focused on weight loss at all, but rather vibrant health. Thus, I had a powerfully encouraging and motivating goal and affirmation to guide me. Weight loss was secondary, thus “disarming” its power.

Researching the Best Eating Habits For Health And Weight Loss

I don’t pretend to be any sort of expert on weight loss. However, it’s clear to me that you had better start researching what foods are best for increasing metabolism and as well as those that decrease it. I studied several Men’s Health magazines and grew in my understanding of what foods were effective in increasing metabolism as well as simply nutritious. Before you jump in, at least learn some basics.

Have An Eating Plan

I won’t go into detail here, but I had a clear idea of what I would eat and what I wouldn’t. Basically, I didn’t cut out any general food groups like some diets (I was never on a diet, only an eating plan). Here is a summary:
  • Lunches were always prepared the night before and dinners planned.
  • Whatever portion I thought was adequate, I reduced.
  • I practiced a form of “Grazing.”
  • I ate less meat and starches and increased vegetables and fruit.
  • I ate “protein bars” for dessert.

Impulse eating or meal preparation is usually a step backwards. I carefully thought through what I was going to eat and why. I made a game out of preparing a meal and considering what would be an adequate portion (i.e. of chicken). I then simply reduced the portion and usually increased the portion of fruit or vegetables.

At work I always has a container of snack foods such as carrots, raisins, walnuts or pecans. Since I was eating smaller portions, I did get hungry during the day. The snacks took care of that and I made it into a fun time, repeating my Weight Loss Affirmations. I believe this was a critical step in the process.

The idea of mostly cutting out whole food groups like some diets do, seemed foolish to me. I simply ate less of everything except fruits, vegetables and fruit juices (which I increased). I drank water a lot more and never touched soda.

Protein bars became both my desserts and snacks. I chose flavors I enjoyed and took a few moments to celebrate the victories I was achieving as I ate them. This is a great habit to practice. This puts an incredible positive spin on the whole process. Many feel that dieting is a burden (I know I do). I found the whole process of repeating “Vibrant Health” as the basis of my WEIGHT LOSS AFFIRMATIONS as great fun and a constant opportunity to express an attitude of gratitude.

Increase Physical Exercise

walking track

It’s all about burning less calories than you take in. I wanted to get back to regular exercise anyway. Whatever you choose, you’ve got to do it at least three times a week (or more). I was out of shape so badly I could only run a ¼ mile! I just kept at it, repeating my WEIGHT LOSS AFFIRMATIONS regarding Vibrant Health.

Small And Reasonable Weekly Weight Loss Goals

I CRINGE when I read ads extolling how so-and-so lost 25lbs in a month. If you can do that, stay healthy and keep it off, more power to you. However, the odds stink!

My goal was only 1 ½ lbs per week. I would weigh myself whenever I went to the YMCA, and if it looked like I was losing too much, I “slowed down” on the eating plan so that I would not lose what I felt was too much. I wanted this process to be gradual so that my mind and body were in sync. It may not have been a Biggest Loser Diet, but it worked well for me.

A “Stepped” Approach to Weight Loss

I don’t know if any “experts” use this system or if I accidentally invented it. I had started out at 235lbs in late February and reached about 213 lbs sometime in late June. Frankly, I got tired of monitoring my weight and wanted a break. So, I decided that it might very well be easier for metabolism to “catch up” if I simply stayed at about the same weight for awhile.

Continuing on some sort of focused weight loss plan for month after month can wear you down psychologically. I felt that it would be more healthy to get used to this new weight (and a smaller pant size) for awhile and then have another “campaign” few months later. Each “campaign” would be another “step” in my plan.

I started again in September at 217lbs with the goal of reaching 200lbs. This time I lessened the goal to only 1lb per week. I lost a little faster than I had planned and by December had reached 203lbs. I was quite proud that I did this right smack in the middle of the holiday feasts and parties. It wasn’t a problem since I had developed habits of eating that satisfied me. It was no sacrifice at all.

Vibrant Health And Not Weight Loss Is The Primary Goal

What a difference it has made maintaining an exciting and motivating goal before me. My WEIGHT LOSS AFFIRMATIONS don’t deal with weight at all. As you have read, I certainly had a plan of weight loss, but it was just a sub-category of a powerful affirmation - Vibrant Health.

At this writing( August 2008), it’s been about 8 months since my last “campaign.” I recently decided to get back on the “campaign trail” and desire to get under 200lbs. I’m at about 207lbs right now. I’ll go about it a bit more casually, focusing on exercising more. I won’t utilize any more WEIGHT LOSS AFFIRMATIONS than I am now. I’ll continue to enjoy having ice cream a few times a week (I forgot to mention that) and am confident that by the Holidays I should be under 200lbs.

In the meantime, I am:

Glad and grateful to be experiencing and enjoying VIBRANT HEALTH

April 2009 Update

I am now at 195 lbs. What a joy it was that day when I was under 200 lbs, the first time in 33 years! I continue to enjoy good health and energy and am sleeping better than ever.
