THE MASTER KEY SYSTEM; it was just an “accident” that I found it. It was January 2007 when I bought the book at Barnes & Noble, after seeing and then browsing through this book with a strange title. At the time, I knew next to nothing about The Law of Attraction. I could never have imagined that it would shape and transform my life as it has.

THE MASTER KEY SYSTEM, by Charles F Haanel, was written in 1912! Charles F Haanel was no self-help philosopher. He was the founder of Continental Commercial Company, one of the largest corporations in his day.

Even though he was a practical man of business, he had a profound understanding and personal grasp of psychology and self-improvement, particularly in the power that is available to us in our thoughts.

What he presented in his book is perhaps best summarized by these words:

We must be before we can do, and we can do only to the extent which we are,and what we are depends upon what we think.

Our Minds Are The Creative Force Determining Our Reality

In THE MASTER KEY SYSTEM, Charles F Haanel used the phrase “Law of Attraction and Abundance.” He saw our minds as creating the conditions that we experience, whether they are negative or favorable. He stated that these laws are:

...no respecter of persons, but in constant operationand relentlessly bringing to each individual exactly what he has created.

True, most people have lived "by default" and have allowed the Law of Attraction to passively bring to them the results and consequences of their thinking. Yet, his book is full of hope to those who discern these laws and follow them:

So with the law of Abundance:it is only those who recognize the law and place themselves in harmony with it, who share in its benefits.

THE MASTER KEY SYSTEM is a book that I go back to again and again; especially if I feel out of sorts or out of balance as it unfailingly grounds me.

Being a strong-minded business man and not some “feel good” self-help guru, Haanel saw his principals being carried out and proven in a challenging business world and culture that was probably not open and receptive to the deep psychology and teachings of the subconscious and Universal Mind Laws that he presented. From part three:

The subconscious mind is a part of the Universal Mind. The Universal is the creative principle of the Universe, a part must be the same in kind and quality as the whole.

Further:

We have found that the subconscious mind is responsive to our conscious will, which means that the unlimited creative powerof the Universal Mindis within control of the conscious mind of the individual.

Some may find his style a bit dated, but if you read carefully, you will find he is concise and systematically presents a premise and then builds upon it to a conclusion.

I’m amazed how he can communicate truths about the subconscious and Universal Mind Laws in a way that is so easily digestible; not at all like some of the esoteric teachings presented today.

Work On Causes First - The Results Will Follow

Today many try to use The Law of Attraction for what they can gain, not realizing they are seeking effects. In The Master Key System Charles F Haanel was always focused on the causes first:

There are many who have come to an understanding of this wonderful power, and who make serious and conscientious efforts to realize health, power and other conditions, and seem to fail. They do not seem to be able to bring the Law into operation. The difficulty in nearly every case is that they are dealing with externals. They want money, power, health and abundance, but they fail to realize that these are effects and can come only when the cause is found.

His understanding of how critical it is to focus on what you want and not on the things you do not want is profound:

For instance, a man is in debt. He will be continually thinking about the debt, concentrating on it, and as thoughts are causes the result is that he not only fastens the debt closer to him, but actually creates more debt. He is putting the great Law of Attraction into operation with the usual and inevitable result - Loss leads to greater “Loss.”

What, then, is the correct principle? Concentrate on the things you want, not on the things you do not want.
The points that have most enlightened me are the following:

Thought is a creative force and will express itself in the objective world
Most people seek effects - you must seek causes
Our mind (through the subconscious) is the same in kind as the Universal Mind
You can change the conditions of your life by changing and directing your thinking
Thinking and The Law of Attraction simply follow natural laws
The source of all life and power in found in the “world within” (our minds)

How much do I appreciate and value this book? It has been and continues to be bread to me, life-giving and energizing. In fact, if I could only keep one book on the Law of Attraction, The Master Key System wins hands down!
