When Customer Service Changed My Life!

When Angela said those words - "MAKE IT A GREAT DAY," she had no idea that she would literally change the focus and direction of my life. make it a great day flower

Up to that point during our phone conversation, she had been helpful and polite, but so were the dozens of other people I would speak to that week from "customer service." After she said "MAKE IT A GREAT DAY," I felt as if a switch was flipped inside my head. That expression has had a profound impact on my thinking as well as my understanding of the power I have to choose my attitudes and how I will experience each day. This event occurred back in 2001, but since then, "MAKE IT A GREAT DAY" has been my daily “Call to Action.” I also firmly believe that practicing this principle led me to discover for myself The Laws of Attraction.

Don't Hope It Happens - Make It Happen!

Almost everyone seems to say, “Have a nice day.” It’s a pleasant and considerate way of wishing people well. Yet, it is exactly that; a wish. It’s a passive statement that is saying that you hope someone has a nice day. Sometimes it brings you a warm feeling when you hear it. However, you have the power to do far more: You have the power to MAKE IT A GREAT DAY.make it happen chalk boardYet, what if circumstances aren’t so pleasant the rest of the day? What if people are rude and inconsiderate? What if you don’t feel well physically? What will “Have a nice day” do for you then? That’s why you should take on a new way of thinking. You can determine how good a day is even before it happens! You have to decide for yourself that you will MAKE IT A GREAT DAY.

In The Master Key System, Part One, Charles Haanel says this about the power of our thinking:

Harmony in the world within means
the ability to control our thoughts,
And to determine for ourselves
How any experience is to affect us.


Take Charge Of Your Day

make it Happen doorHow often to you allow the circumstances of each day, or even the mood that you are in affect your feelings and thinking about the rest of the day? I’m sure that this occurs way too often. You have probably let the weather, some comment made or even the way someone looks affect your mood and your perspective of the day.

You are surrendering your power when you do this. You are lowering yourself, making yourself like a victim, who can be manipulated, pushed and shoved by the smallest things. Take your power back. Take back your power of choice - use your initiative and focus your mind - MAKE IT A GREAT DAY.

Can you determine how circumstances affect you? If you’re like the overwhelming majority of people, you simply let them affect you. You’ve gotten into the habit of passively allowing your feelings and attitudes to be shaped by whatever random event happens.

In order to get out of that powerless, weak reaction that has become an ingrained habit grooved into your subconscious, you have to make a decision about what you want out of each day. You will have to literally plan to MAKE IT A GREAT DAY.

Watch Out For Those Little, Annoying Circumstances

In focusing on making it a great day, I have found that it’s easy to allow “little” situations to slowly “chip away” from my attitudes.

I’ve noticed that I’ve reacted negatively when customers come into our store with coffee. Yes, people really shouldn’t be bringing drinks or food into a store. But, it’s really a small and insignificant event. When I make a critical comment to a fellow employee about people bringing coffee into the store, I am only giving away my power to respond in a positive way.

Recently I’m taking initiative and smiling when someone walks in with coffee and reminding myself that my purpose is to help them design the lighting in their home in a way that will bring them joy and satisfaction. Be careful to not allow these seemingly insignificant circumstances erode your path toward making it a great day.

Make a decision about how you’re going to MAKE IT A GREAT DAY. Take a proactive stance by purposeful and decisive behavior and not just sit back passively and hope you’ll respond to situations in a positive manner. Here are some suggestions:

  • Smile as often as possible
  • Be enthusiastic when you greet people
  • Shake that hand like you mean it
  • Find someone to appreciate (and then let them know)
  • Get the chin up and shoulders back
  • At day’s end, congratulate yourself for particular ways you made it a great day
  • Relentlessly practice an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
